From being named Oxford Dictionaries’ word of the year in 2013 to stealing the show at this year’s Oscars, the “selfie” has already become an inescapable part of our popular culture. Now, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is hoping to turn it into a force for change.
Launched last month on International Youth Day, #ShowYourSelfie is a global campaign to highlight the needs and rights of young people in post-2015 development goals, and to make sure governments in every country invest in youth. As you can see in the video above, young people around the world are using their own photos to make a statement that they deserve a seat at the table in determining development priorities for the next 15 years.
UNFPA will be delivering all selfies to world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly next week. To add your voice to the “visual petition” and help put young people in the spotlight, upload your picture to ShowYourSelfie.org.
